Building an observation hive for the county fair — one frame or two? And how do I not cook the bees?
Quebec, 5 years. Our club got a booth at the regional fair in August plus two school visits in September, and I've volunteered (been volunteered) to build and run the observation hive. Before I cut wood I'd love real-world input.
One-frame vs two-frame: the single deep frame version is light and everyone can find the queen fast, but can a frame of bees plus queen even hold themselves together for a full fair day? The two-frame (one brood over one stores) seems more self-sufficient but heavier and the queen hides between frames. Also worried about heat — the booth is in a tent, August, glass on both sides. I've heard horror stories of observation hives cooking in an afternoon. Ventilation slots? Shade cloth? How long can they actually stay in the box before I should swap the bees back out? And do you mark the queen with a big obvious dot or make the kids work for it?

Two-frame, no debate — brood below, stores above. A single frame with queen has too few nurses and no pantry; it looks stressed within hours and stressed bees are bad ambassadors. Build with screened vents top and bottom for chimney airflow, and cloth covers for both glass faces — bees kept dark stay calm, you unveil them for visitors. Heat: never in direct sun, period, and glass panels a full bee space (8-9 mm) off the comb or they'll cluster against it and block the view. For a one-day fair with vents and shade they're fine; swap everyone back within 2-3 days regardless.

Did exactly this for our Ontario fall fair last year. Mark the queen but with the correct year color, not a giant blob — 'find the marked queen' was the single biggest crowd magnet we had, kids stayed 20 minutes hunting her. Also bring a spare cloth cover: our tent hit 32 °C mid-afternoon and covered-except-during-viewing kept the cluster totally settled.

Two-frame with chimney vents and curtains it is, and I love the marked-queen scavenger hunt. Build starts this weekend so there's time for a full dress rehearsal in July before any children are watching. Merci!
