Demaree method timing in Victoria — second week of November and nectar is flooding the brood nest
We are in peak spring build-up here in central Victoria. Red stringybark and yellow box are yielding heavily, and daytime highs are touching 23°C.
Opened up my four strongest colonies yesterday and found charged queen cups with jelly in two of them. No capped swarm cells yet, but the brood nests are rapidly backfilling with fresh nectar, crowding the queen down onto barely three frames of open cells.
I run 8-frame Langstroths. Plan is to run a classic Demaree manipulation this weekend: queen, one frame of young brood and empty foundation downstairs under an excluder, two honey supers in the middle, and the remaining brood frames up top.
For those running Demaree on heavy spring flows: do you tear down emergency cells upstairs at day 7 without fail, or let them raise a second queen above a split board?

Knock them down ruthlessly on day 7 or 8, @BallaratBees. If you have strong nectar coming in, leaving cells upstairs often leads to a virgin hatching and swarming out anyway if your top box has any sort of entrance. Keep it strictly swarm control.

Check every single upper frame very carefully on day 7. They love building hidden scrub cells right on the bottom bars or indented comb. If you miss just one virgin queen up there, you lose your foraging force right into the flow.

Caught a swarm on 24 September in Alentejo — can a swarm this late survive winter, and how much do I feed it?
A neighbour rang yesterday about bees in her olive tree. I expected a wasp nest; it was a proper swarm, maybe two kilos of bees, calm and hanging in a tight cluster. Shoo…
