Reading the natural mite drop on the tray after autumn treatment — what daily number sends you back in before winter?
Tyrol, 18 years, 24 colonies at two altitudes. My autumn treatment finished three weeks ago and I now have clean trays under all of them for a seven-day count. I trust the drop more than I trust my own memory of a wash done in a hurry.
What I'm after is other people's action thresholds this late. I use natural drop as a screening tool: single figures across a week and I leave them alone until the broodless treatment; a colony throwing dozens of mites a day in late October gets looked at properly, because at this point every mite is riding on a bee that is supposed to live until March.
Two caveats I'd add for anyone new to trays: a screened floor with no tray for months gives you nothing, and ants or beetles will clear a tray overnight, so smear the edges or check daily. Also, wax flakes and chewed cappings tell you where the cluster is sitting, which is a free bonus.
Curious what numbers other people act on, and whether anyone finds the drop useless once the weather turns cold and flight stops.

Black, shiny, hairless bees trembling at the entrance — chronic bee paralysis virus, or just robbing damage?
Eight years in Provence and this is a first for me. One of my eight colonies — one of the strongest, three deep boxes of bees — has, over the last week, started producing…

How do I know the colony is truly broodless before an oxalic treatment — cluster check, tray debris, or the calendar?
Third year in Uppsala, four hives, and I want to get the winter oxalic right this time. Last year I did an Api-Bioxal dribble by the calendar, mid-November, and my spring…

Found a mouse nest under the frames already in September — what do I do with the chewed comb and the nest?
Well. I was going to fit the mouse guards this weekend, and it turns out a mouse had the same calendar as me but got there first. Galway, second year, three colonies. Lif…

What mite count is actually acceptable going into winter — is 3 per 300 in late September good enough, or is 5 too many?
Second year in Vermont, three hives, and I'm confused about which mite number I should be aiming for right now. Ran Formic Pro in mid-August (two strips, 14 days, temps c…

European hornets (Vespa crabro) picking bees off my hive entrances — real threat, or leave them alone?
Every September the same visitor shows up in my Tyrolean apiary: Vespa crabro, the European hornet, big reddish-brown thing the size of my thumb. Right now there are two …

K-wing bees at the entrance — are tracheal mites still a thing, and how would I even check?
Uppsala, third year, four hives. The last few days I've been seeing a handful of bees on the landing board of one hive with their wings held out at odd angles — the front…
