"A swarm in July isn't worth a fly" — caught one anyway. Can it build up in time?

You all know the rhyme: a swarm in May is worth a load of hay, a swarm in June is worth a silver spoon, a swarm in July isn't worth a fly. Well, it's the 29th of June so technically I scraped in under the wire, but only just. Decent prime swarm, maybe 1.5 kg of bees, dropped into a brood box with a mix of drawn comb and foundation here in Kent. Queen is laying already after 4 days. Question is whether they can realistically draw out and provision a full brood box before autumn, or whether I've adopted an expensive hobby colony that I'll be feeding all winter. Third year for me and I've never overwintered anything this late-started. Feed hard and hope? Combine in September if they're weak? What would you do?

The rhyme is about honey crop, not survival. A late June/July swarm in our climate won't give you surplus, but it can absolutely build into a wintering colony if you help it: 1:1 syrup continuously while they're drawing comb, and the drawn frames you gave them are worth their weight in gold. Assess in early September — if they're not covering 6+ frames with decent stores, combine with something. No shame in it.

Worth saying the rhyme is very much a British rhyme. Down here in Georgia a July swarm has months of warm weather ahead and I've had them make winter easily, sometimes even give a fall super off goldenrod. Region matters more than the calendar. For Kent though, listen to CorkBeeRon — feed like it owes you money.

Thanks both. Rapid feeder going on tonight with 1:1, and I've pencilled the first week of September as decision day. If they're not up to strength by then they'll be newspaper-combined onto my lighter production colony. At least the queen's a goer.
