First sting through my jeans — time to admit my gear is a joke. What's actually worth buying?
First year, two hives in Minnesota. Been inspecting in a veil-jacket combo, regular jeans, and cheap nitrile gloves from the hardware store. Yesterday a guard bee nailed me straight through the denim mid-thigh like it was nothing, and honestly the jacket has been feeling optimistic too now that the colonies are big and June-feisty.
So before I panic-buy everything: what's genuinely worth the money? Full suit vs jacket? Everyone raves about vented suits but they're double the price and Minnesota summer isn't exactly Texas. And gloves — the goatskin ones look nice but people say you lose all feel and squash bees. Nitriles clearly aren't sting-proof, I have the thigh to prove it (wrong body part, same principle).
Budget isn't unlimited, so rank it for me: where does the first $150 go?

First $150: a good vented full suit, even in Minnesota. It's not just heat — vented fabric is thick enough that stingers mostly can't reach skin, which is exactly your jeans problem. A calm beekeeper takes fewer stings, and nothing calms you like trusting your suit. I wore a cheap cotton jacket for two years and my inspections got noticeably better the week I upgraded.

Fifteen years, and my ranking: veil quality first (your face is non-negotiable), suit second, gloves last. On gloves — goatskin when doing rough work like moving boxes, nitrile for delicate frame work. Nitriles do take stings, but far fewer reach you than bare-handed, and the venom mostly stays in the glove. Squashing bees in thick leather kills more bees than it saves you stings.

Second year in Ontario, so basically your climate: I bought the vented suit last summer and it was the single best bee purchase I've made. Cool days it's fine, hot days it's survivable, and I've had exactly one sting through it (elastic cuff, my fault). Buy a size up so it tents away from your skin.

Ordered a vented full suit one size up, keeping nitriles for frame work, and adding goatskin gauntlets to the birthday list. The thigh has voted and it votes suit. Thanks everyone.
