Anyone running a Slovenian AŽ hive outside Slovenia? Considering building a small bee house
Istria here, so Slovenia is practically over the hill, and I've been visiting a friend's čebelnjak (bee house) near Maribor — three walls of AŽ hives stacked like filing cabinets, all worked from the back, indoors, in a shirt, while rain hammered the roof. Frames slide out backwards like drawers; no lifting a single super all day. My back has opinions about my seven Langstroth-style hives.
Before I commit to building a small bee house with four AŽ units: has anyone here run them OUTSIDE the Slovenian/Austrian tradition? What's the honest downside — fixed frame count limiting the broodnest? Extraction logistics with the two-chamber layout? Sourcing frames abroad? And does the bee house itself cause drifting problems with entrances so close together?

Tyrol has plenty of bee houses and I ran AŽ alongside magazine hives for a decade. Honest downsides: the fixed volume is real — a booming colony can't be given a third super, you manage swarming with discipline instead of space, and honey yields per colony run a bit lower. Frames must come from Slovenian/Austrian suppliers or your own jig. Upsides are what you saw: no lifting, work in any weather, hives winter beautifully in the shared structure. My 70-year-old neighbour runs 20 colonies alone because of it. Drifting: paint each front a different colour/symbol, solved problem.

I imported two AŽ hives to Flanders three years ago out of curiosity. They're lovely to work but I'd underline AlpineCarnica's frame-sourcing point hard — every dimension is its own standard, nothing interchanges with my other kit, and I ended up making a table jig to build my own. If you're building a bee house anyway, commit properly with 4+ units so the carpentry pays off; one lonely AŽ in a shed is the worst of both worlds.

Following with interest from Quebec — does the enclosed bee house help in brutal winters? Wondering if the concept ports to -25°C country or if the Slovenian winters it evolved for are just milder.

QuebecBees — my friend says the house mostly buys wind protection and stable temps, and Slovenian winters do hit -15° in the valleys, so I'd guess it helps but isn't a heated-shed miracle. AlpineCarnica, BuckfastLinda — exactly what I needed, especially on committing to 4+ units. Winter carpentry project it is.
