How does bee genetics and selective breeding work?

A queen mates with many drones, so a colony is a mix of half-sister subfamilies, and its temperament is an average rather than a single genotype. That is why breeding progress needs drone control as well as queen selection. Select on measured traits — mite counts, overwintering, temperament — recorded across seasons, not on one good year.

Known for gentleness, the Carniolan, fast-growing, the Italian, and long-tongued, cold-hardy Caucasian bee are the most vital commercial races. To test a colony's disease resistance, a capped brood area is pierced with a pin, then their 24-hour cleaning rate is measured.

When the hive gets overcrowded and queen pheromones drop, the colony builds queen cells and leaves the hive with the old queen. Eating a rich nectar source, a forager bee runs in a figure eight on the comb, waggling her body to share its direction and distance.

Due to pesticides, stress, and electromagnetic waves, forager bees suddenly abandon the hive and fail to return, leaving it empty. Meant only for mating and lacking stingers, drones are brutally kicked out of the hive by workers when autumn arrives to save resources.
