Yellowjacket trap baits — what actually works without catching your own bees?

Texas, four hives. Yellowjacket pressure is ramping up like it does every August and I want traps out BEFORE they get bad, not after. But last year I used a homemade soda-bottle trap with sugar water and juice and caught almost as many honey bees as wasps, which felt like shooting myself in the foot. So, the actual question: what baits are genuinely selective? I keep seeing heptyl butyrate lures mentioned for the commercial traps. And I've read the protein-vs-sweet thing — meat baits early in the season when they're provisioning brood, sweet baits in fall when they switch to carbs. Does that hold up in practice? And how far from the hives are you placing traps — near the hives to intercept, or far away to avoid drawing them in?
