Small-cell and foundationless as varroa control — does the evidence actually support it? Skeptic asking honestly
Eight years in Skåne, and every summer the same claim resurfaces at our club: regress your bees to 4.9 mm small-cell (or go foundationless for 'natural cell') and varroa stops being a problem, because shorter capped period / less room in the cell / pick your mechanism.
I've genuinely tried to find the supporting science and I keep finding the opposite — controlled trials showing no meaningful difference in mite loads. But the anecdotes are so confident, and some of these people really do treat less than I do.
So, honest question for the group: is there any controlled evidence FOR small-cell varroa control? And if not, what explains the anecdotes — survivor stock, brood breaks from all the comb building, coincidence? Not trying to start a war, I'd happily be wrong if it means fewer treatments.
You've read correctly. The controlled work — Berry, Owens & Delaplane 2010, Ellis et al., Seeley & Griffin 2011 on naturally built small comb — consistently found no reduction in varroa growth on small cell. Some trials even measured slightly HIGHER mite density per bee area. Whatever is helping the treat-less anecdotes, cell size as the mechanism has been tested and failed. Anecdote survives because the beekeepers who lost those colonies stop talking about it.

I run half my Texas yard foundationless and I'll defend it — but not for mites. Bees build what they want, I get clean wax and easy drone culling in spring. My washes are the same both sides of the yard, four years running. The honest case for foundationless is bee-scale benefits and flexibility, not varroa. Anyone selling it as mite control is selling.

Winter reading season down here in Wellington so I've time for this one. The anecdote-explainer you're missing: confounds travel in packs. The treat-less small-cell people are typically also doing brood breaks (all that comb building), splits, local survivor queens, and low apiary density. Any of those genuinely helps. The cell size gets the credit because it's the visible, purchasable part.

14 years, tried the regression myself around 2015 — two seasons, proper effort. Washes said it did nothing and I went back. What DID cut my treatments: queen breeding for hygienic behaviour and hard brood breaks via splits. Boring answers, well-supported answers.

This is exactly the discussion I hoped for — thanks all, especially TexasBeeSam for the honest foundationless-user perspective. Sounds like the mechanism is dead but the confounds are the interesting bit. I might steal the split-based brood break idea properly next season.
