Cluster is against the front wall with a gap of empty comb between them and the honey — do I move a frame?

Minnesota, first year. Following the advice on here I cracked the lid on a mild afternoon to check my fondant plan and got a proper look down between the frames. Both colonies are clustered, which is reassuring. What I don't like is where. In hive two the cluster is pushed right up against the front wall in the top deep, on frames one to four. Frames five and six are empty drawn comb — I think that's where the last brood was — and the capped stores don't start until frame seven and run to the back. So there's about two frames' width of empty comb between the bees and the food. Everything I've read about winter losses here says the cluster moves up and sideways slowly and can't cross a cold gap. Two frames doesn't sound like much, but at -20°C I assume it might as well be a mile. Do I go in on the next warm day and rearrange — slide the store frames next to the cluster and move the empties to the outside? Or is moving frames around in a clustered colony in mid-October more dangerous than the gap? It's meant to reach 14°C on Saturday, which might be my last chance.

Quebec. Take Saturday's window and rearrange. That gap is exactly how isolation starvation happens — full frames a hand's width away and a dead cluster. Be quick and be gentle: lift the store frames from the back, slide them in against the cluster's edge frames without prising the cluster apart, and put the empties at the outside. Ten minutes, no smoke needed beyond a puff.

Vermont. Agreed, and one addition — while you're in there, note whether the cluster is in the TOP box with stores above and beside it. If everything is below them you've got a different problem, because they move up far more readily than sideways. mn_newbee, don't try to centre the cluster, just close the gap.

One from the warm south, for what it's worth: whenever you rearrange late, put the frames back in a sensible order and write it down. Come February you'll want to know where the food is without opening anything, and a sketch in a notebook beats memory every time.

Did it Saturday at 15°C, about eight minutes. Two store frames now touching the cluster, empties to the outside, and I sketched the layout in my book. Also added the eke for fondant while I had the roof off.

Fondant's been on three weeks and hasn't moved — do they not need it, or can they not reach it?
