Package vs nuc, one full season later — what would you actually buy next spring?
Retrospective thread! Last spring I started with one package and one nuc, side by side in the same Vermont yard, partly as an experiment. Now feels like a fair time to compare, and I'd love other people's one-season-later verdicts too.
Mine: the nuc was a month ahead all season — it made me a super of honey in year one while the package spent that month drawing comb and building up. BUT the package taught me more (I actually saw them draw a hive from nothing, watched the queen get released, understood buildup properly), it cost $40 less, and interestingly it went into winter with lower mites — the nuc came with someone else's varroa situation and older comb.
Both survived winter, so no dramatic ending. If I were advising a new beekeeper today I'd say: nuc if you want honey and a safety margin, package if you want the education. What's everyone else's take after doing both?

First year with one nuc here and reading this I'm glad I went that way — I needed the safety margin more than the education, I've made enough mistakes as it is. Though watching a package draw a colony from bare foundation does sound like the better classroom.

Did the same experiment in Ontario! Same result: nuc a month ahead, made honey year one, package caught up by late summer. One thing you nailed that nobody warned me about — my nuc absolutely came with a mite head start. First thing I do with any nuc now is a wash within two weeks of install.

Twelve years in: I'd tell a beginner to buy a nuc from a LOCAL producer they can phone in a panic, and that the source matters more than the format. A good local nuc beats a good package; a good package beats a tired nuc of old comb and someone's culled queen. Inspect what you're buying — frames of solid brood, all stages, and ask the age of the queen.

Package person here (it's what was available by the time I decided in March). The buildup education is real but so is the terror — mine nearly absconded in week one and I had no clue what normal looked like. If you're the anxious type, I suspect the nuc's head start is also an anxiety head start.

22 years and I still buy a few packages most springs — for filling deadouts on drawn comb, where their only disadvantage disappears. That's the quiet third answer: package onto DRAWN comb builds nearly as fast as a nuc. It's packages on foundation that pay the month-long tax.
