One year in today: everything I wish I'd known when the package arrived
One year ago today I installed my first package in a snowy Minnesota April — okay, the anniversary math is off, it was the day I ORDERED them, but let me have this. One colony became two, both are heavy and treated and ready for my second winter, and I have opinions now, which is apparently what year two is for.
What I wish I'd known: 1) Varroa is not optional homework. Treat on schedule, wash to verify, even when the colony "looks amazing." Looking amazing is what collapsing colonies do all summer. 2) Start with two colonies, not one. Comparison is diagnosis, and a spare queen source once saved my season. 3) Inspect less. My poor June bees. 4) The local club is worth ten forums — except this one, which taught me to heft, wash, and stop panicking. 5) Write everything down. April-you is a stranger to September-you.

Happy anniversary. Twenty-two years in and your list is better than mine was at year five — especially #1, which most people learn the expensive way. My addition: learn to read the entrance. Ten minutes watching traffic, pollen, and behavior tells you most of what a full teardown tells you, at zero cost to the bees. The hive tool is for confirming suspicions, not generating them.

Fellow newbee here, a few months behind you, and screenshotting this whole thread. The "inspect less" one stings because my June bees suffered the same enthusiasm. Adding mine even though I'm barely qualified: buy the good hive tool the first time. I'm on my third cheap one and the maths has stopped working.

After twenty years mine is this: the bees are not trying to pass your inspection. Half of first-year anxiety comes from expecting the colony to match the book, when the book describes an average that no real colony has ever read. Learn what YOUR colonies look like when they are well, and deviations will announce themselves. Your #5 is how you get there — the notebook is the real mentor.

Congratulations mn_newbee — from one of the people who watched those first-year questions evolve in real time, the glow-up is real. Mine, five years in: your losses will teach you more than your successes, but only if you autopsy them honestly instead of blaming the weather. Every dead-out has a lesson with your name on it.
