Can someone explain what "queenright" actually means in practice? I never see my queen

First year, two hives in Minnesota, and I have a confession: I've seen my marked queen exactly twice since April. Every video says "make sure the colony is queenright" and I nod along, but honestly I'm just... guessing? People here keep saying "eggs means queen" but I want to make sure I understand WHY. Is it because eggs only last a few days before hatching? So if I see eggs, she was there recently even if I can't find her? And what about larvae — do those tell me anything, or only eggs count? I inspected yesterday and found no eggs that I could see (my eyes aren't great) but lots of small curled larvae in open cells. Am I ok or should I panic? Both hives seem calm and busy.

You've basically got it. An egg stays an egg for 3 days, so eggs = a laying queen was present within the last 3 days. Larvae still help: the smallest larvae (comma-sized, swimming in milky jelly) are only 1-3 days old, so queen present within ~6 days. Your "small curled larvae" almost certainly means you're fine. Practical tip for bad eyes: hold the frame with the sun coming over your shoulder, straight down into the cells. Eggs look like tiny grains of rice standing upright day 1, tilted day 2, flat day 3. Calm hive + open brood in all stages = queenright. You don't ever need to see her.

Second year here and I still find eggs way easier to spot on dark comb than fresh white comb — the contrast is completely different. Also a cheap pair of +2 reading glasses lives in my bee bag now, total game changer.

The sun-over-shoulder trick took me an embarrassingly long time to learn. Also don't panic at one inspection with no eggs — queens sometimes slow down or pause in a dearth, and it doesn't mean she's gone. Look for the whole picture like GeorgiaWes said.

This is so helpful, thank you! Went back out this evening with reading glasses and the sun behind me and... eggs. Loads of them. Standing up like little rice grains exactly as described. Feeling much better.
