My tiny nuc got robbed out while I dawdled through an inspection — lessons learned

Posting this as a warning to fellow slow inspectors. I have a 3-frame mating nuc from a split, maybe two cups of bees. Yesterday was warm and I spent a good 25 minutes going through it frame by frame taking photos, open feeder cup on top, honey frame leaning against the stand. By the time I closed up there was a cloud of fighting bees at the entrance — robbers from my big production hive next door had found it. This morning the nuc is nearly cleaned out and there are shredded cappings all over the floor. The bees survived and the queen's alive, but the stores are gone. I know it's my fault. What do the experienced folks do differently with nucs — how short is short enough, and do robbing screens actually work once robbing has started?

We've all done a version of this. My nuc rules: under 10 minutes total, never leave a frame or feeder exposed, entrance reduced to one-bee-wide always, and I inspect nucs either early morning or in a light drizzle when robbers aren't flying. Photos wait for strong hives. And never open a nuc during a dearth if you can help it — check your flow first.

Robbing screens work, but they work best fitted BEFORE trouble — once robbing starts they help the defenders regroup over a day or two while the robbers hammer the screen face. Fit one tonight, stuff the entrance to a single bee gap, and drape a wet sheet over the nuc for the rest of today. Then feed only in the evening, inside the hive, no drips.

With my fierce-tempered bees here robbing turns violent fast, so I also move a robbed nuc 2-3 metres and face it a new direction if screens alone don't break the pattern — the robbers' memory is tied to the exact spot. Queen alive means you've lost stores, not the colony. Feed and she'll rebuild.

Thank you all. Screen fitted, entrance down to a pencil width, wet towel on top, and fed a cup of 1:1 after dark. Far fewer fighters this morning. New personal rule: nuc inspections get a 10-minute timer on my phone and the camera stays in my pocket.
