Everything is glued shut — propolis season has made my inspections a demolition job

Second year, two hives in Galway, and sometime in the last month my bees turned into grouters. Every frame is cemented to its neighbours and the box. The crown board might as well be welded on. Last inspection I put my hive tool under a frame lug, levered, and the whole frame jumped loose with a CRACK and I squashed three bees catching it and pinged half the frame's bees into the air. The colony's mood went downhill fast after that, understandably. Is there an actual technique to this? Do I loosen everything first and then lift, or work one frame at a time? Which end of the hive tool does what? I have the standard flat/bent tool and a J-hook someone gave me that I've never really understood. Also, is this much propolis normal for late summer or do I just have particularly enthusiastic decorators?

Totally normal — they're weatherproofing for winter. The secret is TWIST, not lever. Slide the flat end between frame lugs and rotate the tool like a key — the seal cracks gently instead of storing energy and snapping. Break every joint along the box first, THEN lift, so nothing jumps. That J-hook is the best frame tool you own: flat end under the frame, hook end over the neighbouring frame's lug as your fulcrum, and the frame rises straight up slowly. My top bar hives are solid propolis by this point in the year — this is the only way I stay on speaking terms with them.

Two things to add to TopBarDavid's excellent answer. First, timing: propolis is brittle when cool and chewing-gum sticky when warm. An early-morning inspection cracks clean; a hot afternoon one smears everything including you. Second — stop calling it a nuisance and start scraping it into a jar! Clean propolis is a harvest. I sell mine and the tincture, and buyers pay well. Your enthusiastic decorators are giving you a second crop.

The twist-like-a-key thing is a revelation, tried it on hive two this evening and it was a different sport entirely. J-hook finally makes sense too. And muglabalci I did save the scrapings — tiny jar so far, but it smells amazing. Thanks lads.
