Rotating treatment classes against resistance — my amitraz/thymol/formic/oxalic logic, poke holes in it
Fourteen years in Tuscany, and after watching fluvalinate and coumaphos become expensive placebos across much of Europe, I treat rotation as non-negotiable. My current logic, open for criticism:
The synthetics are where resistance lives. Amitraz hits the mite's octopamine receptors; the old pyrethroids hit sodium channels; coumaphos the acetylcholinesterase. Single-target modes of action, so resistance selection is fast when you use the same one every year — and amitraz resistance is no longer theoretical in some regions. So: amitraz appears in my rotation at most every third year.
The organic acids and thymol are different — broad physical/chemical modes with no documented field resistance, so I lean on them: formic in summer (the only treatment that reaches mites under cappings), thymol as an alternate-year summer option when it's too hot for formic, oxalic in the broodless window where it excels precisely because nothing is capped.
Am I overthinking the amitraz spacing? Underusing it?
Your logic is sound and close to mine. One sharpening: rotation matters most where treatment pressure is highest — commercial-dense areas share resistant mites through drift and robbing, so your neighbours' habits are part of your resistance picture whether you like it or not. In Muğla I've gone further and dropped amitraz entirely; formic, thymol and winter oxalic carry the whole year fine. I don't miss it.

From the US side where amitraz resistance is a live, documented problem in heavily treated regions: you are not overthinking the spacing, if anything keep it and guard it. The thing that broke fluvalinate here wasn't the chemical, it was every operation defaulting to it every year. Amitraz is walking the same road. My rule now matches yours: never the same synthetic two years running, organic acids do the everyday work.

Question from year three: does the rotation logic apply if I've ONLY ever used the organic acids and thymol? I.e. is there any resistance reason to rotate among formic/oxalic/thymol themselves, or is that group safe to lean on indefinitely?

SourwoodGrace — no documented field resistance to the organic acids or thymol despite decades of use, which makes sense given their broad modes of action, so no, you don't rotate within that group for resistance reasons. You rotate within it for CONDITIONS: formic wants the right temperature window, thymol wants warmth but not heat, oxalic wants broodlessness. Match tool to moment and your set is complete.
