Green drone frames for varroa — is the freeze cycle really every 21 days? My math isn't mathing

Second year in Vermont, trying to do varroa IPM properly instead of just reacting in August like last season. I put a green drone frame in each of my three hives at the edge of the brood nest, plan being: freeze it every 21 days, same as the worker cycle, thaw, scratch open, give it back. But now I'm second-guessing the interval. Drones take longer than workers to develop, right? So is 21 days from insertion actually the right rhythm, or am I going to be either freezing half-empty frames or — worse — hatching out a bonus crop of mite-loaded drones because I timed it wrong? Also, does this actually move the needle on mite counts or is it one of those feel-good chores? Alcohol wash last week was 2 per 300, so I'm not in trouble, just trying to stay ahead.

Your instinct is right — 21 is the wrong number. Drones take 24 days from egg to emergence, and the bees first need several days to draw and lay the frame, so from insertion you realistically have until around day 26–28 before the first drones (and their mites) emerge. In practice, don't calendar it at all: pull the frame when it is mostly CAPPED, which lands around 3–4 weeks after insertion. Capped is the point — that's where the mites are sealed in. Two frames per hive in rotation makes this painless: one in the freezer while the other is being laid.

And yes, it moves the needle — varroa prefer drone brood by something like 8 to 10 times, so each frozen frame removes a disproportionate share of the reproducing mites. Studies put it at meaningfully slowing colony mite growth in spring and early summer. But it's a brake, not a treatment — you'll still likely need a proper treatment later in the season. The deadly failure mode is forgetting a frame; then you have built a mite factory.

Phone alarm labeled 'FREEZE THE FRAME OR ELSE'. I'm serious — I forgot one in June two years back and my August wash was ugly. The frame doesn't forgive vacations.
