Yellowjackets hammering my weak nuc — traps, reducers, what actually works before they finish it off?
Ontario, second year. My July nuc (5 frames, maybe 3 covered in bees) is under siege — yellowjackets patrolling the entrance all day, diving on returning foragers, and today I watched two walk straight in past the guards. Found a few chewed-up bee bodies on the ground out front.
My two full hives shrug them off but this nuc clearly can't. So far I've stuffed the entrance down to about 2 cm with foam. There's obviously a nest somewhere near because the pressure is constant.
Do those bottle traps with sweet bait actually help or just advertise the yard? Should I move the nuc? Give it a frame of bees from a big hive? It's my first raised queen and I'm quite attached to her, embarrassingly.

Three moves, in order. 1) Entrance down to ONE bee width — a single cm hole in wood, not foam (they chew foam). Guards can hold a doorway, not a corridor. 2) Boost the nuc tonight with a frame of emerging brood and adhering bees from a strong hive — population is the real defense. 3) Traps yes, but hung 20-30 m AWAY from the hives, sweet bait this time of year (late-summer wasps want carbs). Traps at the hive entrance just ring the dinner bell. If you can find and destroy the nest at dusk, even better.

Everything GeorgiaWes said saved a nuc of mine last September in Quebec. One addition: a robbing screen works on wasps too — the offset entrance confuses them badly while your bees learn it in a day. And feed the nuc INSIDE, in the evening, if it's light. A hungry nuc sends out desperate foragers and defends worse.

Done and done — drilled a 1 cm entrance in a wood block, frame of capped brood + bees went in from my big hive, traps hung by the back fence. 24h later the entrance looks calm and I watched a guard actually eject a wasp this morning. She lives! Thanks both.
