Do small hive beetles overwinter inside the cluster, and is a beetle trap still earning its place in October?
North Carolina, third year, six hives. Beetles were a proper nuisance in August — I had traps in every hive and was still squashing adults on the inner cover every visit. Now that nights are in single figures the numbers have dropped right off and I've only found two beetles in the last fortnight.
What I don't understand is where they go. I've read they overwinter as adults inside the cluster, warmed by the bees, which sounds grim but also means the ones in my hives now are next spring's problem. If that's true, is it worth pushing hard on traps for another few weeks, or does trapping in a cold hive just give me something to fiddle with while the bees are trying to settle?
Related question — any autumn practice that reduces the spring beetle load? I've heard that beetles pupate in the soil and that keeping the ground under the hives dry and in the sun helps, and that reducing colonies to the space they can actually patrol is the real control. Interested in what works for people further south than me too.

Georgia, twenty-two years with beetles the whole time. Yes, adults overwinter in the cluster — they get tolerated, herded into corners and warmed. You won't trap your way out of that in October and the fiddling costs you more than it gains. What actually matters is the thing you said last: reduce the colony to the space it can patrol. A strong colony on four boxes has corners it can't police; the same bees on two don't.

Texas, fourth year. Same, and I'd add the soil point is real — larvae leave the hive to pupate in the ground within a few metres. Hives on a sunny, well-drained spot rather than shaded damp grass makes a visible difference the following year. Won't fix a weak colony though. Nothing fixes a weak colony in beetle country.

Jalisco. Agreed on space. One practical thing for spring, SourwoodGrace: never leave a colony with wet supers or spare comb stacked on it while it's weak. That's where mine always slime out. And if you find a slimed box, get it away from the apiary before you deal with it — the smell recruits every beetle in the neighbourhood.
How long do mites survive in a dead-out, and is comb from a varroa collapse safe to give to another colony?
Skåne, eight years. I've got the boxes from a colony that collapsed in September sitting in my shed — properly diagnosed as far as I can tell, heavy mite load, deformed w…

Velutina nest found 200 m from my apiary in late October — is destroying it this late still worth it, and who do I call?
Provence, eight years, sixteen hives. A neighbour clearing branches found a nest the size of a beach ball high in a plane tree at the edge of the village, and it's unmist…

Reading the tray debris in October — what do wax flakes, chewed cappings and pollen crumbs tell me about the cluster?
Vermont, second year. After the mess I made of not noticing a dying colony last month I've put clean trays under all three remaining hives, partly for mite counts and par…

Oxalic dribble or a vaporiser for four hives in Kent — which would you buy, and what safety kit do I actually need?
Kent, third year, five colonies after the unite. My winter treatment has always been a dribble because that's what my mentor lent me, and a few people at the association …

No broodless window in southern Spain — is caging the queen to get a clean varroa treatment worth the risk?
Andalusia, ten years, 22 colonies. The northern threads about timing a treatment for the broodless period are lovely to read and completely inapplicable here. My colonies…

Late-October robbing at 24°C in Georgia — my entrance setup and how I spot the hive that's being stripped
Twenty-two years in middle Georgia, 40-odd colonies. October here isn't a wind-down, it's a knife fight. Days still hitting 24°C, nothing much coming in, and every colony…
