How do I harvest pollen, propolis and royal jelly?
Each product needs a different trap and a different discipline. Pollen traps must be emptied daily and the pollen dried or frozen immediately or it moulds. Propolis comes from a mesh screen the bees fill, then chilled and cracked off. Royal jelly requires grafting and removal at day three, and is only worth it at scale.
Step by step
- Pollen trap
- Propolis screen
- Grafting tool and cell cups
- Freezer or dryer
- Choose the product first and fit the matching equipment: a pollen trap at the entrance, a propolis screen under the roof, or grafting frames for royal jelly.
- Empty pollen traps every day without fail, and dry or freeze the pollen the same day. Pollen left in a warm trap moulds within hours.
- Chill propolis screens in the freezer before flexing them, so the propolis cracks off cleanly instead of smearing.
- For royal jelly, graft young larvae into cups and harvest the cells about three days later, at peak jelly volume.
- Store every product cool, dark and sealed, and label it with the harvest date — these are food products with real traceability requirements.
The full lesson
The white wax capping that shows honey is ripe must be gently sliced off using a special uncapping knife or comb. Uncapped frames are spun inside a centrifugal extractor, emptying the golden honey without damaging the delicate honeycomb structure.
Propolis, made by bees to disinfect the hive, is harvested by freezing special plastic traps placed on top of the hive. Colorful pollen grains carried on the hind legs of worker bees must be collected daily from special trap drawers at the hive entrance.
Perga, formed by fermenting pollen with honey and enzymes in cells, is the most valuable and easily digestible bee product. Pure bee venom crystals are collected using an electrobionic glass plate at the hive entrance without harming or killing the bees.
