What equipment do I need to start beekeeping?

Buy one hive type and stay with it, because boxes and frames from different systems will not interchange, and standardising is what makes swapping frames between colonies possible later.

A modern beehive, rising layer by layer, is a perfect masterpiece of engineering. Everything starts at the bottom. The landing board is the airport where bees land safely.
The large bottom layer is the brood box. The queen lays eggs here, growing the colony. The upper boxes are called honey supers. Bees store their winter and harvest honey here.
Frames are the rooms of the hive. Beekeepers insert wax foundations into these frames. Safety is rule number one. A beekeeping suit and veil protect you completely from stings.
The smoker is a beekeeper's best friend. Cool smoke signals danger, keeping the bees calm. Bees seal the hive with sticky propolis. The hive tool is used to pry frames apart.
