Double boiler vs solar melter vs slow cooker for end-of-season wax — and what do you do with the slumgum?
Season is wrapping up in Małopolska: ten hives extracted, about 3 kg of cappings drained and dried, plus six old black brood frames pulled during the autumn comb rotation. The solar melter that did such good work in July barely warms up now — we've had a week of cloud and 14°C — so the rendering moves indoors.
My setup so far: an old stainless pot as a water bath inside a bigger pot, cappings in a mesh bag, rainwater not tap water because our water is very hard. The cappings give beautiful yellow wax. The old brood comb is the pain — a whole frame of comb gives a thin disc of dark wax and a big greasy cake of slumgum, cocoons and rubbish, that stinks and sticks to everything.
What do you all actually do with the slumgum? And has anyone moved from the double boiler to a dedicated slow cooker for the winter months? I keep hearing about wax fires and I'd rather not test my kitchen insurance.

Slow cooker with a few cm of water in the bottom is my winter method now, PasiekaOlek, and I would not go back to balancing pots. It sits at 80-90°C, well below anything dangerous, and I can leave the kitchen without watching it every minute — though never leave the house. Wax straight on a hob is where the fires come from: it doesn't boil, it just gets hotter until it ignites at around 200°C. Never direct heat, always water underneath. And your rainwater instinct is right; hard water leaves a grey chalky layer on the underside of the block.

The solar melter still works here in the Alentejo until late October, so my cappings go through it and only old comb comes indoors. The old-comb batch is a separate rendering, I never mix it with cappings wax — one dark frame ruins the colour of a whole batch. Slumgum: I dry it and it goes in the wood stove as fire lighters. It burns beautifully. Don't compost it near the apiary, it smells of honey for months.

Slow cooker here too, but with a paint strainer bag over a second pot for the pour, and I let the block cool slowly overnight with a towel over it — cool it fast and it cracks and the crud sticks to the bottom in a thick layer. A caution on the old aluminum stock pot some folks use: acidic water plus aluminum leaves the wax gray. Stainless or enamel.

Slow cooker ordered — second hand, 20 zloty, so the insurance is safe. Fire starters for the slumgum is the answer I was hoping for, our stove eats anything. And I'll keep the old comb wax as a separate dark batch for candles; the cappings wax is going to the association exchange.
