First big harvest weekend done — everything I wish somebody had told me on Friday
Third year, six hives in North Carolina, and this was my first proper harvest — pulled 11 mediums over the weekend. Sharing my lessons while the kitchen floor is still slightly tacky:
1. You need more buckets than you think. I had four 5-gallon buckets and needed seven. Nothing stops an extraction party like hunting for food-grade containers at 9pm.
2. Everything gets sticky. The floor, the door handles, the cat. Put down cardboard or a tarp BEFORE you start, not after the first frame drips.
3. Escape boards the day before were worth it — barely any bees in the supers.
4. Uncap over a real tank or a big roasting pan, not a cookie sheet. Cappings hold a shocking amount of honey.
5. Extract in a bee-tight room. Three scouts found my kitchen window screen gap within an hour.
Ended up with about 140 lbs. What did everyone else learn the hard way their first big harvest?

22 years in and I still put cardboard down. My additions: warm supers extract way easier — pull them and spin the same day if you can, or keep the room hot. And strain into buckets THROUGH the sieve straight from the extractor gate, don't plan on a separate straining day. Future you is tired.

Wet supers back on the hives above the inner cover in the evening, and only on strong colonies — set them out in the open here once and started a robbing frenzy that took days to settle. Learned that one properly the hard way.

First year here, bookmarking all of this. Question — how long did you leave the escape boards on? I've read anywhere from 24 to 48 hours.

mn_newbee — 24-48h works, but don't leave them longer than 2 days or the bees find their way back up. SourwoodGrace, one more for the list: weigh your buckets before you fill them. Guessing net weight later from 'about this full' is how you end up re-pouring 60 lbs of honey.

All added to the doc for next year. GeorgiaWes was right about the straining — I did leave two buckets unstrained 'for later' and regretted every second of round two. Escape boards went on Friday evening, pulled Sunday morning, worked a treat.
