Selling at the farmers market for the first time next weekend — label and legal gotchas?
Following up my harvest thread — I've got about 140 lbs jarred and a booth booked at our local market next Saturday. North Carolina, so I've read our cottage food / honey rules, but I want the practical version from people who've done it.
What I think I know: label needs the word honey, my name and address, and net weight (in both pounds/oz and grams in the US). I should NOT say 'organic' — no way to certify what 6 hives foraged across a 2-mile radius — and 'raw' is apparently a minefield since it has no legal definition.
What I don't know: pricing psychology (round numbers? odd?), whether sample spoons are worth the mess, how many jars a first-timer actually sells at a small market, and whether anyone's been burned by rules they didn't know existed. Every state seems different, which is exactly why I'm nervous.

Texas but the fundamentals travel. Bring way more 1-lb jars than anything else — that's 80% of my sales. Samples absolutely work: little tasting sticks, one flavor open at a time, and sales roughly doubled when I started. Pricing: don't be the cheap guy. Local honey buyers aren't price shopping, and underpricing just tells them something's wrong with it.

The rule that burns people at markets here: check whether YOUR market or county requires anything beyond state cottage rules — some markets want liability insurance or a permit on top, and they check on your first day, not when you book. One phone call to the market manager this week saves the worst Saturday morning of your year.

Did my first market in Ontario in June (different rules, same nerves). Non-obvious things that mattered: a cash float with lots of small bills, tap-to-pay if you possibly can, and a little sign explaining crystallisation is natural — I got asked about 'sugar added' four separate times in one morning.

From my market stall in Hokkaido: the story sells more than the honey. A photo of your hives on the table and 'from 6 hives in [your town]' on a card outsells any label polish. Also bring a damp cloth and a dry cloth. Honey booths get sticky, always, everywhere.
