Walk-away split vs just buying a mated queen — someone check my math
Vermont, second year, three strong hives and I want a fourth. Option A: walk-away split — free, but the bee math scares me. Split with eggs today, they raise an emergency queen (emerges ~day 16 from the egg), she matures and mates a week-ish after that, so I'm looking at roughly 4 weeks before I see her first eggs — call it 7+ weeks before her first workers emerge. That's most of my remaining season.
Option B: $50 mated queen from a local breeder, laying within a week of the split.
Is the $50 basically buying back a month of build-up? Our main flow ends mid-July so a walk-away made now barely contributes and has to be fed into fall. Am I missing any argument for the walk-away besides cost and the fun of it?

Your math is right and that's the whole answer: a mated queen is you paying $50 for about 4 weeks of laying, and in a short-season state those are the most valuable 4 weeks you can buy. Walk-aways make sense in April-May when the season can absorb the delay, or when you're splitting six hives and $300 of queens stings. One hive, late June, Vermont? Buy the queen. Bonus nobody mentions: with a purchased queen you also skip the ~20% chance an emergency queen fails to mate at all and you're merging that split back in August.

Agree for your timeline — Quebec's is similar. One middle option: do the split, buy the queen, but ALSO leave the split a frame with eggs for 24h first. If they start cells you know it's hopelessly queenless and she'll be accepted much more readily when you introduce her caged. Improves acceptance odds a lot.

Winter here in Mendoza so I'm just reading along with mate in hand, but I'll add the Southern data point: the same math is why our splits all happen in our spring (Sept-Oct), never after midsummer. The season decides, not the wallet. Enjoy the buildup season for me, mine's under cluster.
