What does a queenless colony actually SOUND like? Mine changed its voice and I'm worried
Second year, three hives near İzmir. Opened hive two yesterday evening and the sound was different — not the usual even hum but louder, higher, kind of an unsettled roar that didn't calm down the whole time I was in there. The other two hives settle within a minute of me opening up.
Everyone talks about 'the queenless roar' but nobody describes it properly. Is it constant or does it come and go? I couldn't find the queen (never can, she's not marked) and light was going so I didn't do a proper egg check.
Bees were also a bit runny on the comb and there was more bearding than the others. Or am I inventing symptoms now? What should I actually check tomorrow to settle it, and how fast do I need to act if she's really gone?

You described it exactly right — it's the not-settling that matters, not the volume. A queenright colony grumbles when you open it and then drops back to a working hum; a queenless one keeps that agitated, higher pitch the whole inspection. Runny bees fit too. Tomorrow: look for eggs, nothing else. Eggs present = she's there, close up, stop worrying.

If no eggs, the definitive answer is a test frame: take a frame with eggs and young larvae from one of your other hives, mark it, put it in the middle. Check in 2–3 days — if they've pulled queen cells on it, they're queenless and you let one finish or requeen. If no cells, a queen is probably in there (maybe a virgin not yet laying). Costs nothing and can't lie.

On urgency: you have more time than the panic suggests, but not forever. Laying workers typically start around 2–4 weeks after the last brood, and once they're going it's a much harder fix. So use the test frame this week, not next month. Also no eggs plus a roar right after a swarm-y period can just mean a virgin on mating flights — the test frame covers that case too.

Checked at noon — no eggs I could find, so the test frame from hive one is in and marked with a drawing pin. The roar was still there today. Will report in three days. Thank you all, feeling less like I'm imagining things.
