How long can a caged queen wait? Mated queen arrived but her nuc isn't ready
Uppsala, third summer. Ordered a mated Buckfast queen for a nuc I was making up this week, but the donor colony threw me a curveball — found a frame of queen cells during setup, so I need a few days to sort that mess out before the nuc is truly queenless and ready.
Meanwhile Her Majesty is sitting on my kitchen counter in a shipping cage with five attendants and a candy plug. The supplier note just says 'introduce promptly'. Realistically, how long can she wait like this without harm? Do I need to do anything for her — water, warmth, darkness? And I've heard of 'queen banking' for longer storage — is that something a hobbyist with four colonies can even do, or is that a queen-breeder trick?

On the counter with attendants: a few days to a week is fine if you help. Keep her in a dark, quiet spot at room temperature — never sunlight, never the fridge — and touch a drop of water to the screen once or twice a day; the attendants handle feeding from the candy. Quality does slip the longer she's out of a colony, since she's not being fed for laying. Two or three days is nothing. Aim to have her in the nuc well within the week.

Banking is not a breeder-only trick but it needs a queenless setup: a strong colony (or a boosted nuc) with no queen, packed with young nurse bees, cages racked between brood frames so nurses can feed through the screen. Attendants come OUT of the cage for banking — they can be attacked through the mesh. Banks hold queens for weeks. Total overkill for one queen and four hives though; MieleMarco's counter method covers you.

One thing that bit me last year: sort those queen cells out completely before introducing, and double check for a virgin already running around. A nuc that 'should' be queenless but isn't will kill an expensive introduced queen every single time. Shake through every frame.

She's in the hall cupboard, water dropped on the screen morning and evening, and today I found — of course — a sneaky just-emerged virgin in the 'queenless' nuc. Dealt with. Introducing the Buckfast tomorrow evening on day four. Thanks all, especially for the shake-through warning that found her.
