Winter thread from South Africa: capensis laying workers that make FEMALE brood — thelytoky up close
Midwinter here in Mpumalanga — dry season, aloes flowering, my scutellata colonies ticking over nicely. But I lost one last month to something most of the Northern folks here never face, and I think it's worth a thread: the Cape honeybee problem.
Cape bee (Apis mellifera capensis) workers are thelytokous — a laying worker produces diploid FEMALE brood, not drones. So a few drifted capensis workers in a scutellata colony become pseudo-queens: their offspring are more capensis clones, the real queen fails, the workers don't forage properly, and the colony dwindles while looking 'queenright' on the comb. Solid worker brood, no queen anywhere. The clone lineage has been spreading through northern SA since the 1990s and there's a reason moving bees across the demarcation line is restricted.
It fascinates me and terrifies me in equal measure — a worker that can found a matriline. Happy to answer questions from the summer half of the world.
Wonderful thread. For the Northern readers: this is why 'laying worker = drone brood in worker cells' is a rule with a footnote. In capensis, thelytoky works by automictic parthenogenesis with central fusion — the egg restores diploidy without fertilisation. Nearly all other A. mellifera laying workers can only make haploid drones. NalediBees, how early can you catch an infested colony — is there any tell before the dwindle?

Fellow winter beekeeper here in Wellington — we're just doing stores hefts and mouse guards, nothing this dramatic. Genuine question: if the clones make workers, why does the colony collapse instead of just... becoming a capensis colony?

ImkerinLena: earliest tell for me is behaviour, not brood — pseudo-queens get retinues, and you see multiple eggs in cells placed properly on the base (unlike the sloppy wall-eggs of ordinary laying workers). KiwiBeek: the clones are social parasites in scutellata colonies — they lay but largely don't forage or nurse, they beg food like queens, and the host workforce ages out. It's colony-level parasitism, not a takeover that leaves something functional behind.

Thanks for this NalediBees — here in Nigeria we have our own fierce adansonii but nothing like thelytoky. When you confirm an infested colony, is there any salvage or is it shake-out-and-burn territory? And does the dry winter slow the drifting that spreads it?
