New mated queen arrives Thursday — direct release, candy plug, or push-in cage?
Third year in North Carolina. One of my five colonies has been queenless nine days (my fault, rolled her), no laying workers yet, and I've got a mated Italian queen shipping in Thursday. I've only ever done the standard candy-plug intro and I've had it go both ways — two accepted fine, one balled the moment I released her a few days later.
Now I'm reading about push-in cages over emerging brood having the best acceptance rates, and on the other end some sideliner on YouTube direct-releasing everything and claiming he never loses queens. The colony's mood seems okay — not roary, taking syrup, they started two queen cells off old larvae which I'll knock down.
What's your go-to, and when do you escalate to the push-in? Is direct release ever actually a good idea or is that guy just gambling with good odds?
Direct release works right up until it doesn't, and the guy on YouTube doesn't film the balled ones. My rule after 22 years: candy plug is fine for a truly queenless, calm colony like yours sounds — but ONLY after you've destroyed every emergency cell, and check them again at release because they'll rebuild from anything young enough. Escalate to push-in for laying-worker hives, defensive colonies, or expensive breeder queens where a 95% shot isn't good enough.

One addition — nine days queenless with cells started means they may feel 'queenright in progress'. Knock the cells down, wait a few hours minimum before caging her in there, and leave the candy exit pointed slightly down so a dead attendant can't block it. And resist peeking for a week after release. More intros are ruined by curious beekeepers than by bees.

I requeen 20-odd colonies a year and push-in over emerging brood is my default for anything I care about — she's laying inside the cage within days and acceptance is nearly automatic because young bees emerge under her. Costs you five minutes cutting hardware cloth. Candy plugs are for when I'm in a hurry.

Going candy plug with a cell re-check at install, and I'll cut a push-in cage to have ready in the truck in case the mood's changed by Thursday. The 'they don't film the balled ones' line is going to live in my head rent free.
