I united my two weakest colonies yesterday and I regret nothing

Confession thread. I've been nursing two struggling colonies all August — one with a queen laying a patchy dinner-plate of brood, one that never built past five frames after a late swarm. Every inspection I told myself they'd turn the corner. They didn't. Yesterday I stopped pretending: found and removed the patchy queen, newspaper-combined the two boxes, done in twenty minutes. The old Swedish saying is you take your winter losses in autumn, and it's true. Two four-frame colonies don't make it through a Skåne winter; one eight-frame colony with the better queen has a real chance, and I get a clean box and drawn comb back in spring instead of two dead-outs to scrape. Anyone else make the hard call this month? It gets easier the more winters you've seen.

Twenty-two years in Georgia and I'll co-sign every word. The sentimental math never works: two weak colonies eat double the feed, cast double the doubt, and die anyway. My rule is anything under six frames of bees by mid-September gets combined, no appeals. The newspaper trick has never failed me in two decades if you remove one queen first.

I needed to read this today. I've got a five-frame colony in Kent I keep making excuses for — "the ivy flow will save her." It won't, will it. Question: you removed the patchy queen rather than letting them fight it out — is that essential? I've seen people combine and let the bees choose.

KentishBee — letting them fight is a coin flip and the coin sometimes lands on both queens dead or the worse one winning. You've inspected all season, you KNOW which queen is better, so make the choice yourself. And no, the ivy won't turn five frames into ten. Combine her while the weather's still kind.

Did my first ever combine two weeks ago in Vermont for the same reason and it felt like giving up. Reading this thread, it apparently just means I'm learning faster than I thought. The combined colony is now wall-to-wall across nine frames and taking syrup like it means it.

Newspaper combine didn't work — three days on and the bees haven't chewed through, what did I do wrong?

Only two small patches of brood left at 60°N — is my queen shutting down for winter or failing?
