Requeening a hot hive but the old queen is unmarked — how do you actually find her in that chaos?
One of my six hives has turned genuinely nasty over the last month — followed me 30 meters to the shed last week, stings through the suit, neighbors starting to comment. Queen is from a swarm last year, unmarked, and the colony is on two deep boxes absolutely packed with bees. New mated queen arrives Thursday.
The problem: finding an unmarked queen while ten thousand bees are actively trying to kill me is not going well. I've been through the boxes twice, full smoke, and gave up both times when the air turned into a wall of angry.
I've heard people mention a split-and-search trick and something about putting excluders between boxes and coming back later. Can someone walk me through the actual method? I need this queen dead by Thursday and my nerve is running out.
Been through this plenty with africanized-leaning stock down here. The excluder method is your friend: separate the two deeps, put an excluder between them, reassemble, come back in 4 days. Whichever box has EGGS has the queen — you've just cut your search area in half without finding anything. Some folks add a third box and excluder to cut it to thirds.
Then for the actual search: move the queen box 10+ meters away and go through it there. The angry foragers fly back to the old spot, and within 20 minutes you're searching a box of mostly calm young bees. Completely different experience.

GeorgiaWes's method is the classic and it works. Alternative if you're truly desperate and can't find her even then: shake EVERY bee through an excluder into a box below — workers pass, queen and drones stay on top. Brutal, the bees hate it, but it is certain. I've done it twice in 14 years for exactly this situation.

Do the search early morning while foragers are still keen to fly, and wear washing-up gloves over your leathers — stings in leather gloves leave alarm pheromone that recruits more stingers. Also requeening alone may not calm them for 6+ weeks; the hot bees have to die of old age first. Warn your neighbors it will take until September.

Excluder went in tonight between the deeps — box check Sunday, then the move-away search. AlpineCarnica, good point about the timeline, I'll manage the neighbors' expectations. Will report back, hopefully with a dead queen and all my remaining nerve.
